Externships

  • Research complex legal questions and draft legal memoranda and opinions, including research and analysis of complex constitutional questions and issues of home rule under the County’s Charter.
  • Gain legal and practical experience in economic development matters.
  • Gain legal and practical experience in government contracting, including competitive –bidding requirements.
  • Gain legal and practical experience in negotiating and drafting contracts.
  • Gain legal and practical experience in Ohio’s Sunshine Law.
  • Draft and review legislation.
  • Draft policies and procedures.
  • Attend County Council meetings, including the possibility of attending executive sessions.

Location:

Externs are generally stationed directly at the Cuyahoga County Department of Law.  The Law Department may also station externs at other departments in the County if they are working on a department-specific project.

How to Apply for Externships:

Law students generally apply for externships through the law schools.  If you are a law student interested in an externship with the Law Department, please check with your law school’s externship coordinator.

If you are a law school externship coordinator interested in commencing an externship program with the Law Department, please contact the Law Department’s Executive Administrative Assistant Laura (“Lu”) Chandler at (216) 698-6464 or lchandler@cuyahogacounty.us, and she will follow up with the Director of Law to institute an externship program for your law school.
